There's a document, describing a binary format for XML. In the beginnning it was designed for WAP only, but nowadays it can be used on a wider scale. http://www.w3.org/TR/wbxml/
I used it last year for my thesis, while communicating between mobile devices and a server (in cooperation with Siemens).
WBXML can handle binary content without a problem, and there is no loss of flexibility!
