Like it or not SIP is the def

Like it or not SIP is the defacto standard for VoIP. And not only that, but it looks SIP is the only standard that will be implemented in free/open-source software. And these are features that blend very logically with IM usage.

We need VoIP in jabber. And the easiest way to get that is to integrate with some SIP client. The other sollution would be to 'invent' yet another protocol, and without support outside of the jabber community that will not get far.

The last sollution is to not implement VoIP, and soon you'll see Skype with its proprietary protocols takeing over jabber even for IM.
