Your conclusion ignores the fact that a second company could come along and produce a drug that does something similiar or works around the 1st companies patents. Look at Viagra for instance. It was the only drug of its kind for quite a while, but along came Cialis. It was better, longer lasting, and presumably its price was less (I would have to verify that).
There are usually more than one path to achieve a said result. You just need to be smart enough to avoid the path already taken to break an artificial monopoly such as a patent.
And it'll only be 7-10 years of sickness and/or poverty. So either tough it out with an older treatment or start making more money by patenting something yourself. :-)
