I came across NAT Check which could come in handy at some future date. It talks about "hole punching". The program only checks for the presence of a NAT, and also describes was of getting a peer-to-peer connection setup through a NAT.

Hole punching is STUN? Any application uses that technique? There's something in gnomemeeting 1.20 I think...
